name two things on geo thermal energy.
It is related to the thermal energy
It is pretty much an unlimited source of energy
All heating systems must have a source of ______ in order to produce heat
thermal energy
what is thermal energy?
thermal energy is the total kinetic energy of the particales in a substance
what is the freezing point for C, F, and Kelvin?
C - 0
F - 32
K - 273.15
what is the boiling point for C, F, and Kelvin?
C - 100
F - 212
K - 373.15
what is a conductor? insulator?
conductor - material that allows heat energy or electricity to flow easily
Insulator - material that does not allow heat energy or electricity to flow easily
what is kinetic energy?
it is the energy of movement; particales that make up matter have kinetic energy
what is solar heating?
this is when you have windows and you use the sun to heat a room or area
is heat a form of energy?
yes
what are some natural sorces of energy?
fire, sun, geothermal, decaying matter
examples of geothermal
hot springs, volcanoes, etc..
a little on insulators
Every insulator is given an R-value (aka RSI value); the higher the R-value the better it is at providing insulation
what is thermal conductivity
the ability to transfer heat by conduction
All substance are made up of tiny _____
particals
Good ______ do not allow heat to move easily through them
insulators
some notes on tide thermal energy
It creates a low liquid or solid pollution
It is renewable source of energy
Environmentally friendly
some notes on wind
Used to provide electricity
We have been using wind power for at least 5000 years
notes on nucular energy
There are 104 nuclear power plants in America
It produces electricity, water, etc...
notes on fossil fules
You don’t need trees to use it
Made up of natural substance
Many people rely on fossil fuels for electricity, water, etc...
how does a thermostat work?
inside of a thermostat there is two billamatic strips of metal and when heated one expands faster than the other thus causing them to bend. this will heat up the room or what ever that it needs to, getting hotter as you add more heat to the metals.
what are the three different ways to measure temp. and who invented them?
Celcius -Anders Celsius
Fahrenheit - Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit
Kelvin - Lord William Thomson Kelvin
what do the particals look like in a solid, liquid, and gas?
solid - the particals are close toghether and don't really move around
liquid - vibrate a little and can slide past eachother
gas - the particals have a lot more room and move faster than a liquid or a gas
what is it called when a liquid changes into a gas?
evaporation
What is it called when gas turns into a liquid?
condinsation
What is it called when a solid turns directly into a gas?
sublimation
What is it called when a gas turns into a solid?
Deposition
