Author says that the discovery of zero is a great cultural accomplishment.
paraphrase
Identify the type of the following note.
summary
Dwight McDonald remarked, "In an age that was enthusiastic about social issues, Agee's whole style was individualistic and antiscientific."
direct quotation
The author's experience in Alabama strengthened his commitment: a vision "too intense to be expressed in conventional forms."
paraphrase
The author's intensity in de-emphasizing the role of organized crime in the state is distressing particularly because three other authors believe organized crime is the reason the state is failing to prosper.
critical
The main idea of the chapter was that, to maintain some measure of self-respect, a person must not let others dictate to him what his actions should be.
summary
All note cards contain the author's name in the upper left-hand corner. The author's last name (or the title if no author is identified) is usually sufficient unless the researcher is using sources by different authors with the same last name. In that case, the researcher must also list the author's first name to avoid confusion later. If the same author has written more than one book or article that will be used in the research, the researcher should indicate the title of the work from which she is taking the notes in addition to the author's name. The page from which the notes are being taken should also be listed next to the author's name. At the top of the card, the researcher should write a general topic heading for that note. A general topic heading is the subject for that particular note card. It may be changed later; but it gives the researcher, as she reviews her cards, a general idea of topic areas she has covered. Only one idea should be expressed on each note card.
