How do you do a coupling check and test?

A roll off test (stretch test) must be performed on all trains by either powering gently away or rolling off to test couplings prior to coupling air and HEP (head end power) couplings.

Ensure adjoining couplings do not vary more than 100mm in height.

What is the procedure for approaching and setting up the couplings and flexible hoses before coupling?

- CW to talk to the driver about process

- CW to signal driver to stop loco 2m short of vehicle to get coupled

- ensure both knuckles are opened

- uncouple the flexible hose coupling pipe from the loco dummy coupling

- firmly grip the hose coupling to prevent it thrashing about

- gradually open the brake pipe cock for a short time and close the cock - blows out foreign matter

- stand clear of vehicles to be coupled and in a position where the driver has a clear view of hand signals - don’t stand in pit!

- CW to signal driver to couple vehicles

What is the procedure for disconnecting the hose coupling pipes and uncoupling the automatic couplings?

- CW to apply sufficient handbrakes on vehicle being detached - this must be done with the train air brake released

- CW to locate the emergency brake cock inside carriage and completely drain the brake pipe-leave open-this will ensure spring park brake will be applied (if fitted)

- request pit protection at SXS and SHN and don’t enter pit until protection is granted by the signaller

- CW to enter pit, disconnect and secure all cables, flexible hose couplings etc

- ensure both sides of automatic coupling are disconnected

- operate the coupler lifting gar, exit pit, and signal to driver to move away slowly to separate vehicles

- CW to close emergency brake cock, then continue to assist the task as required.

NB: at SXS and SHN pit protection must be returned to the signaller
