What are claws, nails & hoovers made of and who has them?
Keratinized structures derived from cells of the epidermis that grow continuously. They typically are on terrestrial mammals.
What are claws?
Sharp-pointed structures that occur at the ends of the digits.
What type of claws do most mammals have?
Nonretractable claws which are fixed in position, but some have retractable claws.
What is the function of claws?
DOS - climbing, digging, defense, increased traction while running, helping to hold or kill prey.
What are nails? Who has them?
Covering of the dorsal surface of the ends of the digits. Humans & other primates.
Hooved animals are referred to as what? They belong to 2 different orders - what are they?
Ungulates. Order Perissodactyla and Artiodactyla.
What are the differences between Perissodactyla & Artiodactyla?
Perissodactyla are odd-toed.
Artiodactyla are even-toed.
Describe the digits of Ungulates.
They have a reduced number of digits & stand on the ends of their toes. Most species have only 1 or 2 enlarged toes per foot. The last digit on each toe is covered by a hoof.
What is the function of hooves.
Provide protection to soft tissues of the toes while walking or running.
