Cerebral Lateralization Definition
Localization of function attributed to either the right or left side of the brain
Aphasia
deficit in language comprehension or production due to brain damage, usually on the left side
Broca's Area
left interior prefrontal
Apraxia
difficulty performing movements when asked to do so out of context, also a consequence of damage on the left
differences in female brains
females may use both hemisphere more often for language task than males do
differences in male brains
males are more lateralized .
- males with unilateral lesion in LH more likely to have aphasia than... males with unilateral lesions in RH
left hemisphere is speech dominant in
- almost all dextrals - right handers
- most sinistrals - left handers
Sinestrals
( left handers ) were about 30% and 34% respecitvely
Dextrals
right handers with left - hemisphere diagnosed as aphasic 60% and 2%
functional brain imaging
fMRI or PET scan used to se which half is active when doing a language test
dichotic listening
report more digits heard by the dominant half
Sodium Amytal Test
anesthetize one and check for language function
Dominant hemisphere
one hemisphere is more ddominant or more in control (left hemisphere ) ( assumes the dominant role in the control of all complex behavioral and congnitve process
Minor Hemisphere
right hemisphere
Apraxia
difficulty performing movements when asked to do so out of context, also a consequence of damage on the left hemisphere
Broca's Area
left interior prefrontal cortex damage leads to expressive aphasia
Aphasia
deficit in language comprehension or production due to brain damage, usually on the left
Corpus Callosum
- largest cerebral commisure
- transfers learned info from one hemisphere to the other
- when cut , each hemisphere functions independently
- studing split- brain and optic chiasm so that cisual info can't cross to cotralateral hemisphere
