Business Cycle

The periodic growth and contraction of a nation's economy.

Bank Run

When people rushed to banks to take out all their savings, fearful that the banks would run out of money.

Collateral

An item of value that a borrower agrees to forfeit to the lender if the they cannot repay the loan.

Hooverille

The shanty towns built by homeless people during the Great Depression.

20th Amendment

It changed the date presidents took office from March 4th to January 20th. Changed start of Congress to January 3rd. It put an end to the Lame Duck period.

21st Amendment

The amendment that repealed prohibition.

Polio

This is a serious illness that can cause paralysis and death. This is the disease that caused Franklin Roosevelt to loose the use of his legs.

Lame Duck

This is the period of time between the election of a new president and his swearing in as president. The current president during this time usually cant get any bills passed because Congress is waiting for the new leader to take charge.

It made loans to major economic institutions such as banks, insurance companies and railroads.

Hoover Blankets

The blankets the poor used during the Great Depression. Named after President Hoover who was blamed for the Depression.

Black Thrusday

Thursday, October 24, because the Dow Jones had dropped to record lows the day before investors started to sell stocks and the prices fell. This was the start of the stock market crash.

Black Tuesday

October 29, 1929; the day the stock market crashed.

Dow Jones

An average of all the stock prices of major industries.

Great Depression

The economic crisis beginning with the stock market crash in 1929, and continuing through the 1930s.

Dust Bowl

Region of the Great Plains that experienced a drought in 1930 lasting for a decade, leaving many farmers without work or substantial wages.

Scottsboro Boys

These were 9 African American boys who were wrongly accused of raping a white woman in the south. It took many years to overturn the conviction.

Penny Auction

Farm auctions during the Great Depression at which neighbors saved each others property from foreclosure by bidding low.

Empire State Building

The tallest building in the world at the time, this skyscraper designed by John J. Raskob was a symbol of hope during the Depression.

Hawley-Smoot Tariff

It was a 1930's import tax, the highest in history of the U.S. designed to keep out cheaper European goods.

Bonus Army

Group of WWI vets that marched to D.C. in 1932 to demand the immediate payment of their government war bonuses in cash.
