Mobilization

The readying of troops for war.

Militarism

A government policy that calls for building up the military in preparation for war and giving the military more authority over the government and foreign policy.

Stalemate

When neither side is able to gain the advantage.

Autocrat

This is a ruler with unlimited powers.

Convoy

A group of unarmed ships surrounded by a ring of armed navy vessels for protection against enemy ships.

Armistice

A cease-fire, or an ending to the fighting in a war.

Genocide

The organized killing of an entire population.

Liberty Bonds

In order to raise money for the war, the US government borrowed the money from the American people by selling these.

Reparations

Payments made for the economic injury suffered by nations during war.

Fourteen Points

This was President Wilson's' plan for ending the war and keeping peace in Europe afterwards.

Central Powers

These were made up of the European powers of Germany and Austria-Hungary, in World War One.

Schlieffen Plan

This was a first-strike plan that was developed by Germany in case of war with France and its ally Russia. It called for the quick sweep into France in order to knock it out of the war, so Germany could then focus all its military might on Russia.

U-Boat

This was the German name, short for Unterseeboot, given to submarines. This was a new weapon which changed the ideas of naval Warfare.

Zimmerman Note

This was a secret message sent to Mexico by the German foreign secretary Arthur Zimmermann. The note promised Mexico the reward of the lost territories of Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona, if they would declare war on the United States.

Sussex Pledge

This was the promise given by the German government that U-Boats would warn ships before attacking them.

St. Mihiel Battle

This was the first major battle that the American army led In WWI, as an independent force.

Zeppelins

These were hot-air filled balloons, also known as floating airships, that the Germans used for observation, and bombing missions.

Influenza Epidemic

This was a deadly pandemic, known as the Spanish Flu, that killed millions all around the world.

League of Nations

Proposed by President Wilson, this was to be an organization in which nations of the world would join together to ensure security and peace for all its members.

Versailles Treaty

This was the peace agreement signed by the Germans, and the allies, on June 28, 1919. It was signed at the Palace of Versailles, outside of Paris.
