Slaves couldn't hold propery, leave their masters premises with out permission, be out after dark, congregate with other slaves except for church, carry firearms, or strike a white person even in self defense.

What was the task system?

A system where slaves would be given a particular task in the morning and upon completing, would be done for the day.

What was the gang system?

A system in which slaves were put into groups and compelled to work for many hours until the overseer considered a reasonable work day.

Families were split up even after being long together.
