Describe the general structure of the cerebrum

The cerebrum accounts for the largest portion of the brain and contains the cerebral cortex (both hemispheres of the brain)

* It is divided into left and right hemispheres by a longitudinal fissure and the temporal lobe is separated from the rest of the cerebrum by a lateral fissure.

* Each hemisphere is divided into lobes, the frontal lobe, parietal lobe, occipital lobe, and temporal lobe.

* Gyri are the numerous folds that are on the surface of the cortex.

* Sulci are the grooves/depressions between the gyri, which divide each hemisphere into lobes.

List the function of the cerebrum

The cerebrum (contains the cerebral cortex) controls concious perception, thought and concious motor activity. Can override most other systems. The cerebrum decides it, and the cerebellum gets it done. The cerebrum is 10% of the brains mass but only 1/2 of the neurons as the cerebellar cortex has more.

List the function of the Cerebral cortex

The Cerebral cortex (contains both hemispheres) is the gray matter on the outside of the cerebrum. Most information processing occurs here.

Contains 4 lobes with different functions.

List the functions of the 4 lobes within the cerebral cortex

Frontal lobe- voluntary motor function, motivation, aggression, sense of smell and mood.

Parietal lobe- major center for receiving and evaluating most sensory information except for smell, hearing, taste and vision.

Occipital lobe- receiving and integrating visual input.

Temporal lobe- receives and evaluates input for smell and hearing and plays an important role in memory.

List the function of the Cerebral nuclei

The Cerebral nuclei (basal ganglia) is the gray matter on the inside of the cerebrum. Control of voluntary motor movements, procedural learning, habit learning, eye movements, cognition and emotion.

List the function of the Corpus callosum

The Corpus Collosum contains millions of axons, and is the the largest bundle of commissural tracts. It integrates motor, sensory and cognitive performances between the cerebral cortex on one side of the brain to the same region on the other side. (Left to right)
