What is a EEG?

Electroencephalogram- is an electro physiological monitoring method that records the brains electrical activity. Results when electrodes are places along or in the scalp. The EEG displays wavelike patterns of electrical activity known as brain waves, which reveal different levels of consciousness in an awake and/or sleeping person.

List the types of brain waves and relate each to what activites occur when the brain displays the wave

Alpha waves are observed in a normal person who is awake but in a quiet, resting state with their eyes closed.

Beta waves typically of an alert person, occur during intense mental activity.

Theta waves seen in the first stage of sleep, usually occur in children but can also occur in adults who are experiencing frustration or who have certain brain disorders.

Delta waves are characteristic of deep sleep and in patients with severe brain disorders. Rem sleep occurs here.

List the embryo brain structures and the adult structures that arise from each

The Telencephalon to ... CEREBRUM

The Diancephalon to ... DIANCEPHALON (thalamus, subthalamus, epithalamus, hypothalamus)

The Midbrain (mesencephalon) to ... MIDBRAIN (mesencephalon)

The Metencephalon to ... PONS and the CEREBELLUM.

The Myelencephalon to ... MEDULLA OBLONGATA.
