Behaviourist approach strengths |
•it has practical applications- Classical conditioning is used to treat anxiety disorders. Association can be unlearned "systematic desensitization" Operant conditioning is used to treat psychotic disorders. Rewards good behaviour to improve functioning
•It is scientific- Relies on laboratory experiments. Eg skinners controlled research enabled manipulation of consequences. Allowing for a valid cause and effect statement. |
|
Behaviourist approach weakness |
•limitations to animal research studies- Most studies were based on rats and dogs. Critics argue this tells you little about human behaviour as unlike animals humans have free will so our behaviour is not just based on reinforcement and association.
•it is deterministic- Environmental determinism. They argue behaviour is a result of conditioning and socialization. "Free will is an illusion" our "choices" are determined by our experiences/ environment- skinner |

Social learning theory strengths |
•has practical applications- Modeling allows clients to watch models who are not afraid of interacting with an object and provides vicarious reinforcement showing them how to approach an object in a non anxious way •it is scientific- Research relied on laboratory experiments using standardized procedures making them reliable. Bobo doll experiment has high levels of controll as EVs were minimised as they knew the childs aggression levels beforehand. Capable of making cause and effect statement |
|
Social learning theory weakness |
•supporting research lacks internal validity- Bobo doll experiment was carried out in a lab which is artificial. May have been demand characteristics when imitating models aggression as the doll was designed to be hit they act in a way they believe is expected of them •less reductionist than other approaches - Bandura does not reduce complex behaviours such as aggression down to a simplistic level. He considers interaction between environment and cognitive factors. |
|
Cognitive approach strengths |
•it has practical applications- The assumptions of the cognitive approach led to the development of cognitive behavioral therapy. Mental illnesses are caused by irritation thought processes. CBT successful in treating depression by replacing with rational thoughts. 14 studies 80% of adults benefit with lower relapse rate than drug therapy 14 studies 80% of adults benefit with lower relapse rate than drug therapy •it is scientific- Research is highly replicable as it relies on standardized laboratory experiments.high levels of controll with minimised EVs |
