cause and effect
This is the relationship between two or more events in which one event brings about another. Example: water on the floor is the cause for the effect of someone slipping and falling when they walk through the water on the floor.
chronologically
when events are arranged in the order in which they occur. Example: days of the week, events that have happened during a certain time in history
Fact
this is a statement that can be proved to be true - example: There are 12 months in a year.
main idea
This is the central and most important idea of a reading passage.
article
a nonfiction prose composition that is part of a magazine or newspaper that usually deals with a single topic - Example: The headline story in the newspaper.
author's purpose
the reason for creating the work - Examples: to explain, to inform, to entertain, to persuade, or to describe
opinion
a statement that reflects a writer's belief about a topic and cannot be proved - example: England is the best place to go for a vacation.
point of view
the perspective from which a story is told - example: first person, limited third person
summerizes
to state briefly - example: The Goblet of Fire was a book about a boy who could do magic.
theme
the message, usually about life or society, that an author wishes to convey through a literary work such as a poem, short story, essay or novel
testimonial or testimonies
a statement substantiating a person's character or the merits of the product - example: Use Gatorade. I do. Michael Vick, Atlanta Falcons
tone
the attitude that the author takes toward the audience, the subject or a character
