Point of view- shows us the opinion or feelings of the characters involved in a situation. In literature, it is usually the mode of narration that lets the reader experience what's happening in a story, essay, novels etc.
“I will tell you everything I can tell no one else and you will keep quiet because you can no tongue and cannot speak.” (2)
Metaphor- figure of speech in which two objects that are not related but share some similar characteristics
“I have no bandages, just a bump the size of a baby's fist of the back of my neck.” A metaphor is being used here to describe the size of the bump on Celiane head.
Imagery- using very descriptive and figurative language to describe objects, actions, and emotions in a way that it appeals our senses.

Flashback- usually a time in the story when the character remembers a past event allowing the reader to gain insight into their background.
“Looking around I kept thinking the same thing I did the first time I went to Port-au-Prince with Manman. How can people live in a small village in mountains with their own lamps for illumination at night and others live in a city where every street corner has its own giant lamp?’(92) A flashback is being used here when Celiane is remembering her small village in Beau Jour and how comparing how the people there live vs. the ones in America.
Symbolism- the use of symbols or objects to give them a symbolic meaning different than their literal sense.
“People will look at these paintings and say. “This the story of the Esperance family. This is the ‘stream of their dreams.’ ” Symbolism is being used here as paintings Moy makes represent more that just the subject in the painting but symbolize the struggles and hardships of the Esperance
