3. Point of view/narration often contributes to the meaning of a story. Choose one story and describe the point of view. Why is this point of view significant in the story? How does the point of view contribute to the meaning/theme of the story? How would the story change if the point of view were different?
In Battle Royal, the point of view is that of the main character whom we never learn his name. The story is about the life of a young boy being brought up in a very oppressive white to black time of our country. His point of view is that of a young black boy and his story of finding himself during a very oppressive time. He clearly lacks understandings of his social position, as for him at the time, it was just the way things were. Not

Tatlock was described as "the biggest of the gang." (pg 231) Tatlock’s point of view would have probably been much harsher and expectant of his surroundings. His point of view would be to pummel the other kid and to win. His reasons to win are obviously unknown, but it could be because he felt he needed to appear strongest in front of these men who could possibly kill him. Or perhaps it was simply for money for an unknown cause or both. This answer we'll never know since it wasn't told from his point of view or that of one of the boys who cried when they saw the naked stripper. For that matter, the story could be told by the stripper who in all honesty, was equally as oppressed in this situation. Women still didn't have rights during this time and she was very obviously seen as nothing more than a material object sent there to fulfill the needs of these men.
Every point of view in this story would have been drastically different. Our character specifically gave the story a specific sentiment due to his achievements and intelligence. He went there to deliver a speech with pride for not only himself, but also for his community and was stricken down and made of mockery of every step of the way. Even to the end, you were left feeling that he was cheated and wronged, despite his scholarship and "grand

Literary Analysis Point of view is when a reader can know the thoughts, actions, and words from someone’s perspective. For example, there is the first person point of view, where the narrator is the one telling the story from his or her point of view. In the story “Why, You Reckon?” by Langston Hughes, the narrator is telling the story in first person, from his point of view. The narrator tells the reader about his actions, the words he says, and even what he thinks as he relays what happened to him, a stranger he encounters, and an innocent young man. In “Why, You Reckon?”…

From Slavery to a Newer Slavery Although the titles of Langston Hughes’ “Theme for English B” and Ralph Ellison’s “The Battle Royal” differ completely, they both intend to display African Americans as the subaltern and whites as the hegemony. The subaltern being a group or groups of people, who the hegemony imposes upon and the hegemony being the imposer of its own culture, environment and expectations upon the subaltern. In “Battle Royal” and “Theme for English B,” the hegemony imposes upon the subaltern by using different methods of grading based on the race of each student, rejection of their unifying human attributes and speaking in a less formal way to emphasize their position as the tyrannical hegemony. “Theme for English B” and “The…

Point of view helps the reader to learn who the characters are and the reasons behind their actions, provides a better insight to the themes of the story, and supports plot development. Without the unique use of point of view it would be very difficult to understand the story because "the narrator can do for Sarty what the young Sarty cannot: he understands Abner's anti-social behavior, his anger...can tell the truth about Abner's fires..." (Yunis 6). The use of point of view in this intricate form provides deeper insight to the story as a…

In the short story, “Life at Colony Camp: A Blog” was told from many different points of view, than the reader's understanding of the story would be quite different. For example, in the story, Soledad says that she is excited to take the trip to Mars. This might make the reader have a different opinion about a mission to Mars. Because of a fictional character's confidence, it might make the reader feel the same way because she only gives the positives not the negatives of going to Mars. Whereas, if Soledad’s mother feels differently about the situation because she is scared the something might go wrong, then the reader might feel that way instead.…

In this story” Battle Royal” talks about a black man that remembers the advice that his dying grandfather gave to his son (the narrator’s father) and his remembrance of a cruel betrayal that confirms the grandfather’s advice. The grandfather tells his son to “keep up the good fight,” That means keep fighting for your rights don't give up on anything. The conflict in this story "Battle Royal" is between the narrator's desire for what he (in a slip of the tongue) calls "social equality," or an equal chance for success in society, and the desire of white men to uphold the existing social order by humiliating and subordinating young, black men as an inferior group.…

Social environment influences every action done and every word spoken or written no matter how obviously. From birth, the world surrounding a person sends them small messages of how to act and how to speak. This concept is usually apparent in the written works produced by man. As I Lay Dying reflects the society that surrounded the author and points out several factors from that time in history. The novel reflects the social issues and concerns of the time such as female rights and poverty.…
