Name the different climate zones of the earth.
1) Tropical Zone (The Tropics)
2) Temperate Zone
3) Polar Zone
Why are there different temperatures on the earth?
Since different parts of the earth receive different amounts of sunlight and see the sun at different altitudes in the sky, different places on earth can be expected to have different temperatures.
Tropical Zone (The Tropics)
Centered around the equator and bordered by the Tropic of Cancer on the north and the Tropic of Capricorn on the south. WARM temperatures year round. Consistent amount of daylight at 12 hours per day. Sun's has very high altitude year round.
Temperate Zone (where we live)
This zone has 2 parts.
One, the northern temperate zone which extends from the Tropic of Cancer to the Arctic Circle.
Two, the southern temperate zone which extends from the Tropic of Capricorn to the Antarctic Circle.
In the Temperate Zones, there are noticeable changes in temperature from summer to winter.
Polar Zone
This zone has 2 parts.
One, the northern part is centered around the North Pole.
The southern part is centered around the South Pole. Temperatures here are cold year round as the sun always remains at a low altitude in the sky and fairly close to the horizon.
There will be a period of time when the sun never appears and it is dark for 24 hours a day. The closer you are to the actual pole (north or south), the longer the stretches of 24 hour daylight or darkness will last.
