What are the components of the lube oil system?

- scavenging system and pump which obtains oil from the oil pan cools and filters it and supplies the other two systems

- Main lubricating system and pump which lubricate various moving parts of the engine and turbo charger

- Piston cooling system and pump which sprays oil under the crown of the pistons for Cooling and lubricates the piston pins (gudgeon pins)

How does the driver determine the oil pan level?

Dipstick.

Why does the oil level alter when engine has been shut down for some time?

The oil will drain back into the oil pan when the engine has been shutdown for some time.

To what extent does the oil level rise?

This results in the level being approximately 75 mm higher than when the engine is running.

How is lube oil pressure determined?

And oil pressure gauge is located near the engine governor on a Y class and near the header tank on an N class and registers main lubricating system pressure.

Normal operating pressure is between 50 K PA and 100 K PA at idle speed

What causes the low oil shut down to operate?

If the engine lubricating oil pressure falls below an acceptable level, the low oil shut down device will operate moving the button out causing the governor to shut off fuel to the engine and the engine will shut down.

What are the effects when the low oil shut down operates?

- Audible fault alarm will sound on all Locos in a multi unit

- blue aux Gen fault light

- On the affected loco a yellow fault light will illuminate

- No light is provided on Y class loco

- When tripped the low oil shut down button has a red band visible around it

What are the four possible causes of low oil shut down?

- Engine protector operation

- Low oil level in oil pan

- Dilution of lubricating oil by fuel

- Lube oil system failure such as leaking piping, incorrectly fitted filters or defective oil pumps

What is the effect of low oil in the engine governor?

- Hunt engine revs cannot be maintained and fluctuate constantly

- The engine may shut down

What are the drivers duties when the engine shuts down due to low oil shut down button tripping?

- check if the engine protector is set

- Use the oil level dipstick to check the oil pan level

- If oil is visible on dipstick reset it by pushing the low oil shut down button, restart the engine and check that the oil pressure gauge is between 50 K PA and 100 K PA

- check for obvious oil leaks

- If the oil is not visible on the dipstick do not restart

- If the engine shuts down three times due to low oil shut down operation, recheck the engine protector and if the engine protector is set, the loco is disabled

- Record in logbook

What are the drivers duties when the oil is low in the engine governor?

Low Govenor oil will not trip the low oil shut down button, the driver must check the governor oil level using the site glass provided.

If there is no oil present the driver must seek further instruction from maintenance staff.

The driver must obtain permission to refill the governor if suitable oil is available.
