The human body has turned into a fat hoarding machine in the past decade. People are so overly concerned with everything else in their lives that they do not have time to take care of their own bodies. Too many Americans are becoming obese due to their lifestyle and eating habits. As long as we keep sitting around hoping that one day the problem will disappear, obesity will keep plaguing. Obesity is a serious growing problem in Oklahoma and something needs to be done about it. This crisis has affected healthcare costs, created heavier adults and kids, killed many people, and most importantly took an emotional toll on people’s lives. Food companies market unhealthy food very well by playing tricks with our mind, steering us to unhealthy choices but profitable fare. Although there are many factors contributing to the causes of obesity, we are the ones to blame for our weight. The 1980s were a time when Americans suddenly became interested in using treadmills, dieting, and buying pre-packed non-fat foods. Now in 2014, Oklahoma is the 6th fattest state. If rates keep rising, by 2018 Oklahoma will hold a new record; the highest obesity rate in the nation at 56 percent. Our individual weight problems have become a national crisis. The American Medical Association has officially recognized obesity as a disease. Excess poundage takes a toll on the human body. Obesity has created more than 30 chronic health conditions. While cardiovascular disease and diabetes are the main health conditions associated with obesity, it can also cause certain types of cancer, high blood pressure and cholesterol, depression, ect. Many limitations come with being obese. You cannot do what most “fit” people can. The average BMI for men and women in the U.S stands at 28.7 percent. The BMI of 25 or greater is considered overweight; 30 or greater means the person is obese.
