What are the types of anxiety? The most prevalent disorder is the Generalized Anxiety Disorder. In this specific disorder patients have unfocused worry that is not related to stressful events and is twice as common in women as it is in men (Tyrer &Baldwin, 2006). Patients who deal with this type of anxiety may have palpitations, sweating, trembling and dry mouth when they start to feel anxious (Tyrer&Baldwin, 2006) . Generalized anxiety is difficult to diagnose because it correlates with many other disorders such as hypochondria, panic disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, social anxiety disorder and eating disorders (Tyrer &Baldwin, 2006). Since many other illnesses have the same symptoms clinicians rule out the others before diagnosing somebody with Generalized anxiety. Another common form of anxiety is the social anxiety disorder, or social phobia.
By age eleven, about 50% of individuals have social phobia; this is a risk factor for substance abuse and subsequent depressive illness (Stein &Stein, 2008). About three to thirteen percent of people have a lifetime prevalence of social anxiety (DSM-5). People with social anxiety disorder fear judgment by other people (Stein &Stein, 2008).
