Anxiety sometimes runs in families, so it is thought to be genetic. A person whose temperament is timid or negative may be more susceptible to generalized anxiety disorder (mayoclinic). Females are more likely to be diagnosed and treated for generalized anxiety disorder. If certain pathways in the brain do not run properly there may be problems with anxiety and the patient’s mood. Some environmental causes may contribute to anxiety. Stress from losing job or trauma from losing a loved one may lead to GAD (webmd). Along with continuous periods of stress, the individuals anxiety may become worse.GAD can manifest in childhood but usually is not addressed until early adulthood. One treatment type may work perfectly for one patient but not be successful in another. Treatment should be individualized and adjusted until the patient feels they can function comfortably from day to day. Having a good support system from loved ones may be key to reducing anxiety. Family members may be able to relieve some of the burden off of the patient if finances is the cause of the stress. Having emotional support from family and friends may relieve some of the anxiety as well. Introducing them to other’s who are experiencing anxiety may provide hope to the patient that there is many ways to cope with anxiety. The person may join a support group. Talking with peers that are experiencing stress, anxiety or grief may provide comfort to the individual who is suffering from GAD. Treatment is generally focused on reducing the client’s anxiety level. There are two main approaches to treatment. Psychotherapy and prescription medication may be used in combination or separately. Psychotherapy is a type of therapy where the patient can discuss their illness with a professional. The doctor can teach them tools to use to cope with their anxiety and depression. The basis for this form of treatment is that each individual is responsible for their emotional health. They have the ability to control and change the way they react to life’s situations and stress. If the therapy
