We require energy to function, however the nature of this energy requirement is not widely understood. It is thought that sugar laden foods tend to be energy dense and nutrient deplete (Sugar Industry, 2014). It is suggested that a sensible attitude towards sugar consumption should be applied in an effort to combat this, however the specific understanding of this attitude, is vague and said to be inapplicable to everyday life. How much do we need and how much do we consume? Such issues will be explored in this research investigation. Dietary restrictions have been prescribed by professionals to control sugar consumption levels in an effort to improve health and quality of life (Stanhope, 2012). However with restriction comes restraint and furthers the need for reinforcement of these practices. This investigation will explore if sugar consumption levels in the named demographic, females, between the ages of 50-65 and living in Kildare are adhering to these practices.

The actual intake will be collected from the food and beverage diary which will be inputted into the nutritional analysis software programme, Nutritics (2015) which will calculate the numerical data. These methods of qualitative analysis will be compared to existing data of quantitative analysis, creating a fuller and more substantial
