If a state didn’t comply with the demand the state would take a ten percent cut in annual funding for transportation (3). By 1984, all states complied with the MADD and raised the drinking age top twenty-one (3). Minimum Legal Drinking Age (MLDA) at twenty-one is largely ineffective because the majority of teens consume alcohol before the age of twenty-one (4). In 2004 college president John McCardell said the drinking age law was a “Bad social policy and a terrible law all around” (3). If young adults were taught at younger ages about drinking in moderation it would save a majority of young adults from alcoholism. The MLDA at 18 with supervision would keep young adults from binge drinking (9). There are many benefits to lowering the MLDA. Lowering the drinking age would allow 18-20 year olds to drink in public supervised places, these young adults could really help out the economy in the United States (4). The rest of the world can drink in moderation because drinking isn’t prohibited until the age of twenty-one (3). Military personnel in other countries are allowed to consume alcohol at any age enlisted in the military. Military around the world are able to rink in moderation because they are risking everything for their country. A majority of college students under twenty-one consume alcohol in an irresponsible manner on a weekly basis (4). College students need to be taught how to drink moderately without the attitude “let’s get drunk!” In the colleges around the world, many students think of getting drunk cool or funny. In response to that, if the law was lowered to eighteen students could go to bars or pubs in a controlled environment under supervision. It is highly unsafe to binge drink, the United States is pushing young adults to binge drink behind closed doors. Binge drinking can cause brain damage in anyone at any age
