In order to be in the National Recording Registry, the songs have to be “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” (Kornhaber). “Stand By Me” fits each of these qualities excessively. The release of the song resulted in many people doing covers of the songs. The release of Ben E. Kings “Stand By Me” inspired “covers from people as diverse as John Lennon, Muhammad Ali, and the author Stephen King (who also wrote the story that inspired the hit film that shares the song’s name). More than 400 artists have recorded versions of "Stand by Me" in total, and it's charted multiple times, including twice—decades apart—for King's original” (Kornhaber). Ben E. Kings legacy will continue to be long lived. “Stand By Me” has many different underlying meanings. The song can be seen from many different angles. I prominently see the song being about friendship. Stnading by someone throughtout anything proves true friendship and loyalty. Others have said the lyrics relate to romance or social soliditarity. Stephen King’s novel Stand By Me was made into a movie which used Ben E. King’s hit as its theme song. “Stand By Me” was the most prominent song in the movie and became even more popular for that reason. “Oddly, the song would not have been known to anyone in the 1959 setting of the story, since the initial recording of it by King was not released until 1961” (Nixon). This shows that even without being known, it was significant. The song was so catchy and well written that it gained popularity from being in a movie, a completely different medium. After it was used in the movie, it gained even more popularity and was used in commericials and was recreated by
