With his theory Friedrich Nietzsche gave a sorrowful, mediocre, and secular world new meaning. The following essay will discuss the problems in society during the 1800’s and prove Nietzsche’s greatness in giving new meaning to the world. The essay then proves that it was by Elizabeth Forster-Nietzsche’s deliberate tampering that Nietzsche’s Superman came to be a symbol of Nazi principles. Friedrich Nietzsche opposed common values, which he believed distracted man from life. During Nietzsche’s period, imperialist nationalism or an increasingly questionable religion provided the only meaning to life. Nietzsche opposed both. Though he consistently referred to the “Death of God”, Nietzsche never believed that God ever existed; just that at one point He was an important driving force of western civilization. Alongside the development of secularizing tendencies, the idea of creationism under an all-powerful God gradually lost its plausibility, and by the Nineteenth Century, when scientific rationalism became dominant, it was anachronistic and ridiculously naive. With the loss of an anthropomorphic, law-giving deity and the advent of modern science, it became progressively difficult for society to look beyond a merely arbitrary viewpoint of life and establish a genuine moral order. This was the purpose of Nietzsche’s work and life, to awaken man from his conformist and pointless ‘death-drive’, to establish a new set of values ‘faithful to the earth’. In response to society’s chasm of agnostic immorality, Nietzsche developed the concept of the “Superman”. The Superman lived within a world of eternal recurrence, where time is endless and the universe is bound to repeat itself. The future is the same as the past; everything existing existed before and will continually exist. The only way to escape the meaningless repetition within this system is through the cultivation of the Superman, through man’s conquering of himself to embody
