Cannibalism is has always been a taboo topic in western culture. Most people are familiar with the concepts of cannibalism because of movies like Silence of the Lambs, Fried Green Tomatoes, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and many others. However, very few people understand the truth and the definitions behind what cannibalism really is and the reasons its done. When most people consider the topic of Cannibalism it is typically thought of as a non-western practice. People are generally willing to exploit the practice in media until it hits closer to home. Many Americans are not aware that Cannibalism occurred in the United States, though it was hundreds of years ago, the topic is not considered common knowledge. There unnatural marriages creating the birthing of giants who caused destruction and cannibalism (Travis-Henikoff 2008: 123). The story is elaborate and most likely false, regardless is was recorded in text that was supposedly supposed to be part of the bible.
There are no laws against cannibalism in the United States. This is most likely because the act of cannibalism violates many other laws because it is generally associated with murder and the desecration of a corpse. In fact, most countries with a solid legal infrastructure have laws against corpse desecration and murder do not have laws against cannibalism (“Cannibalism”). In one case, Regina Vs. Dudley and Stephens, Dudley and Stephens were two crewman who had been marooned on an island with a follow crewmate, Parker. After some time, the crew had gone into starvation and dehydration despite their survival attempts. Parker decided he would drink the sea water to cure his dehydration. He then fell comatose at which time Dudley and Stephens killed him and proceeded to drink his blood and eat his meat for survival. Dudley and Stephens were charged with murder and given a life sentence. There were, however, no charges against the ingestion of another human being (“Cannibalism”).This form of cannibalism was classified as non consensual cannibalism for survival.
