Cross-cultural conflict can arise at any time in the workplace and sometimes we are not aware it has even developed until it has become a major issue with another worker or client. Sometimes issues can be resolved simply by talking to each other but at other times mediation needs to be used to come to a reasonable truce and understanding. Even if we speak the same language and follow the same religion there can be conflict because we are all individuals with different thoughts and ideas.

There are many issues that may contribute to cross-cultural conflict. When a work place has cross-cultural conflict such as different language spoken by a worker is causing the breakdown of communication and conflict, it is a hard to solve immediately

Cross cultural conflict can arise from something as simple as the Australian slang used every day or non-verbal behaviour being misinterpreted or as complicated as cultural prejudice which is when one person feels they are better than another because of their cultural background for example: Nazis feeling superior over Jew’s in WW2 (Land-Weber,1984-2004).
There are many ways to solve the cross cultural conflict created in the work place, quickly resolving it is best as the longer the conflict lasts the more it spirals into greater conflict which is harder to resolve. (Open colleges, 2013 pg53) Negotiating is the best way to solve the conflict. The following skills can be used in negotiating and solving cross cultural conflict in the workplace. Firstly being aware of differences in culture in the workplace will often be enough to keep conflict at bay and speaking with a person or different culture clearly and using good non-verbal skills (Open colleges, 2013 pg50). Being open minded and non-judgemental of others will also solve or stop conflict. Respecting that each person is an individual and has individual view points and ways of thinking is very important in the workplace. Understanding and learning about other cultures and taking an interest and observing their values and ideals will make the workplace healthier leading to better work productivity and happier work environments.
