The deontological perspective states that reason determines that categorical imperative is the foundation of morality. According to Immanuel Kant, the categorical imperative determines a set of universal principles by which the right action can be judged. According to Kant, deontology is a theory of morality, which states that if you want to know what is the right thing to do, then apply the categorical imperative. Kants reasoning behind formulating deontology was to establish an ethical and universal system that does not rely on any persons subjective experience, but rather good or evil of an action is determined by logic and reason. The categorical imperative has three formulations, meaning that using one of the three formulations, you are asking yourself whether the principle describing your action could be rationally expressed as a universal law of nation. For example, in the case of killing, if I were to ask myself: if I will it to be a universal law that killing is wrong under any circumstances, would it be rational? logic and reason would say yes, thus the categorical imperative would allow me to determine that killing under any circumstance is considered wrong.
