Someone somewhere in the United States is having a stroke every 40 seconds and every 4 minutes someone dies of a stroke from not being treated fast enough. When having a stroke what are some signs? The most common signs of someone having a stroke are: face drooping, arm weakness or numbness, and strange or slurred speech. The faster you are treated for having a stroke the more likely you are to survive and not have permanent damage (disability). Stroke is the number one cause of having serious long term disability in the United States, every year about 795,000 people have strokes.

610,000 of those strokes are proven to be the first (new) stroke that the person experiences and about 185,000 of those people survive and experience another

Some other lifestyle contributions are smoking, obesity (poor diet), along with health pathologies such as heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. An ischemic stroke occurs when a blood vessel has a blockage (blood clot) and the bloodstream can't get through to the brain. The existing brain cells around the area die due to lack of oxygen.

The obstruction of the blood vessel is caused by fatty deposits. Perpetual risk factors for ischemic strokes are family history, age, gender, sickle cell disease, and race. A genetic factor for Ischemic strokes is Cadasil (Cerebral Autosomal Dominant Arteriopathy Subcortical Infarcts Leukoencephalopathy) a disorder that is inherited and caused by mutations in a gene known as Notch 3, a protein determining fate of the cell during fetal development. An environmental factor is oxidative stress, which is a persistent imbalance between antioxidants and proxidants. The interplay of Notch 3 and oxidation stress causes endophenotype which uses brain hyperintensities induced by Notch 3 mutations.

There are 170 different mutations that cause Cadasil. Unfortunately, there is not a cure or treatment for Cadasil.

Endphenotype is a biological marker that can contain a useful link between genetic sequences and behavioral disorders. Cadasil is the most hereditary cerebral angiopathy, a cerebral angiopathy is a condition in which proteins called amyloid
