Stroke Survivor
On November 30th, 2015 my father, Orlin Ostby suffered a massive stroke. He was found in his bed by our neighbor, unable to move or speak. Our neighbor called 911 and an ambulance rushed my dad to the hospital, where it was determined that he had suffered from a stroke and was lucky to be alive. The stroke effected the right side of his brain causing weakness in his left arm, the inability to move his left leg and slurred speech.
At 20 years old, I received the most terrifying call of my life, my brother called and said, “Something bad happened, dad had a stroke.” my heart sank. I did not know much about strokes or what causes them or if my dad was going to be okay. As soon as I got the call, I drove to the hospital where my dad had been taken.

Once he got to the ER they gave him an IV with medication to help lower his blood pressure, which brought his BP down to a safe level.
After lowering his BP in the ER, a doctor met with my dad and prescribed him medications to help keep his BP in a normal range. The doctor also told him to check and track his blood pressure throughout each day, and to watch his diet and try to stay active. Once at home my dad kept track of his BP but struggled to take his medication properly and modify his diet. During the four months before his stroke, my dad had to be taken to the ER on two separate occasions due to his BP being too

Stroke is the third leading cause of death in America and is one of the leading causes of disability. Just like everything else in our body, our brain is fed by blood through arteries. And just as high blood pressure can damages the arteries of our heart, it can damages the arteries leading to our brain. If the arteries to our brain are only partially blocked, you can experience a transient ischemic attack- kind of like mini stroke. Its a brief, temporary disruption of blood to your brain caused by a blood clot or atherosclerosis.…
