As Mercutio taunts him, Romeo notes words “jest at scars that never felt a wound,” (2.2.46). Since Romeo in no longer an avid lover of Rosaline, he finds it hard to feel angered by the mocking of Mercutio because his feelings of love for her have vanished and therefore the value of words behind Mercutio’s jeers has also disappeared. Romeo emphasizes the diminished value of words by proving that unless a person chooses to listen and believe the thoughts of others, these words will never truly have an impact on them as words can only provide indistinct meaning that cannot fully express powerful ideas and emotions that can hurt others unless people choose to put trust into these words. While wondering about the importance of words, Juliet laments “what’s in a name? That which we call a rose by any other word would smell as sweet,” (2.2.46-47). Juliet sees that Romeo’s name is the only thing that forbids her from loving him because her family is a sworn enemy of Romeo’s family, but she realizes that his name cannot fully define him and that he would still be the same person even if Romeo was not his name. These remarks further exemplify the little value found in words as even a name cannot solely represent an entire being or truely describe all the different in depth qualities of a person. The absence of value in words which can only convey limited amounts of information, actions as ways of communicating powerful and meaningful results, and vows as weak bonds until proven by very people who swear these promises confirms the lack of value in words to express the crucial ideas and emotions in life. Meager importance of the weight of words leaves a ambiguity in people’s minds about the value of words compared to the actions that result in definite achievement as words have become a major part of society with promising politicians in America who often times stand by their positions on issues, but fail to effectively act on these problems, leading to difficulties still quite unsolved. By not mistaking the value of words with the value of actions in conveying critical emotions and ideas, people can prevent the likely consequences that would ensue with the
