Nowadays, women are living independently as men, hence not only all men are created equal, but all human are created equal. Nevertheless, back in the days before, most of the people in the world had different perspectives on women compare to the present, the lives for women at that time were like living in cages. As time goes on, progressively innovative women like Edna and April started to awake, and these awakenings inspire women to gain their true freedom, and their roles in society.
Commonly, man is the head and the main income source of the family; back in the old times, the men even considered their wives as their properties, women could only allow to play the expected role as housewives. However, in the novel The Awakening, Edna didn’t consider herself belong to her husband, therefore she went out home to found her true love bravely. Edna was never freed in her life until her death, she constantly tried to break the society expectations and women traditional role after she awakened, nevertheless, all her attempts were just like a caged bird beats its wings but it can never get out: “A bird with a broken wing was beating the air above, reeling, fluttering, circling disabled down, down to the water.” (115) Her demise led to her soul freedom, thus she chose her end in this way. Like Edna, April didn’t fulfill her dream being an actress, and she ended up being a housewife. Her last hope to get rid of her dull, hopeless life was shattered, thus she invoked death for her relief and deliverance.
