Attention, learning, and memory
Attention and memory are human thought process essential to pursuit of learning. Attention is the act of selectively focusing on a certain stimuli to create imprints or memories in mind. Memory provides recollection of the stimuli previously learned. And, learning is a lifelong pursuit facilitated by attention and memory. Human brain with its complexity is wired differently in each individual. Therefore, each individual’s attention and memory is interlinked with that individual’s learning style. One of the ways individuals learn in the modern era is online learning. Online learning offers the opportunity to pursue an education and convenience of learning from the comfort of one’s home. Three different ways in which people learn are through classical conditioning, operant conditioning, and cognitive-social theory. In classical conditioning, there is a neutral stimulus that comes to elicit a response after it is paired with a stimulus that automatically elicits that response. Operant conditioning is a type of learning that happens when a person associates a response that occurs spontaneously with a particular environmental effect. Finally, we have cognitive-learning theory. Cognitive –learning theory is a theory of learning that emphasizes the role of thought and social learning in behavior. There is a huge impact from learning strategies. First, we are able to see how people and other organisms learn things. Second, by knowing how people learn, people are better able to aid in the learning process. Memory is observations that are stored in a form that allows them to be retrieved and used at a later time. There are different types of representations that are used for memory. These include mental representations, sensory representations, and verbal representations. Encoding refers to information that is put into a representational form, or “code”, so that it can be easily accessed from memory at a later time. All memories must be encoded so that the memory can be retrievable. Working memory is a conscious “workspace” that is used for retrieving information and manipulating
