How to Prevent Suicide Suicide is a serious issue that needs to be addressed. Two reasons why people are killing themselves are bullying and a lack of a sense of belonging. If communities could find a way to change attitudes, behaviors, and tolerance, suicide rates could drop. Today’s life stresses have increased depression and in turn, suicide rates have risen. Improved education on suicide for schools, work environments, and families should be the focus for community counseling programs.
In 2013 there were 41,149 deaths because of suicide in the United States. Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death and the second leading cause of death for 15 - 24 year olds. Every day approximately 105 Americans die by suicide, that equates to one death every 13 minutes due to suicide. Depression affects 20-25% of people 18 and older in a year. Only half of all Americans experiencing an episode of major depression receive treatment. 80% -90% of people that are treated for depression are treated successfully using therapy and/or medication. Male suicides are 4 times higher than females. Male deaths represent 79% of all US suicides. Firearms is the most common method of male suicide at (51%) (American Foundation 2015). Females are more likely to have suicidal thoughts, and they are twice as likely to be depressed as men (American Foundation 2015). Female suicide occurs 3 times as often as males (American Foundation 2015). Poisoning is the most common method of suicide for females.…
