These walks are organized to raise awareness for suicide prevention and to generate funds that are donated to research towards the development of a cause. In 2004, the first walk produced very few participants. Only about 4,000 participated. However, today the AFSP is proud to announce an impressive 200,000 participants. This number of participants continues to grow every year. The main purpose for organizing the “Out of the Darkness” walks is to unify those that have lost loved ones so tragically and also proves that together we can make a big difference in the world. The “Out of the Darkness Walk” is a large contribution to the raise in awareness of the goal of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. There are three different “Out of the Darkness” walks, community walks, campus walks, and overnight walks. The most unique walk is the overnight walk, which can range from 16-18 miles and hosted in a different major city each

When Veterans are in need of social services, they may have to seek help from various community agencies, which leaves an opportunity for Veteran service providers to work within a network throughout each sector. Working as a network and serving as a pipeline for Veterans in need of education, employment, health or quality of life assistance could be lifesaving. However, the obstacle Veteran service providers face, especially non VHA, is a lack of knowledge in regards to services, navigation and resources for suicide prevention. Using a community collaborative care approach to empower Veteran service providers and connect Veterans to the VHA as well as community based prevention services could collectively reduce suicide within the Veteran community. A small scale suicide intervention took on this challenge and were able to express value in using a service sector segmented approach, which connects and educates Veteran service providers in all sectors of services, to identify community stakeholders.…

Department of Veterans Affairs hired 5,300 mental health providers, support personnel and upgraded it Veterans Crisis Line in response to the problem (Time, 2016). It has also elevated the profile of its suicide prevention office within the department and launched new partnerships with community health providers to offer to counsel to veterans. Officials hope to use the data to further expand those offerings, targeting specific regions and populations within the veterans’ community to deliver care more effectively (Time, 2016). However, providing support and assistance for suicidal veterans has been proven difficult, in part because of the lack of data on the scope of the problem. Regardless of Crisis Line, I had learned the Veteran Affair Crisis Line director to resign because of text messages going unanswered (Time, 2016).…
