Why People Don T Get Welfare

Decent Essays
According to dictionary.com, welfare is a financial support giving to people in need, which comes from the government. People shouldn't get welfare for many reasons. One reason is, people who don't work shouldn't get it. Another reason is, food stamps. It's so easy to apply for them, so anyone can get them. Finally, future generations will pick up and do it, just like their parents. As you can see, what welfare is and why people shouldn't get it. One reason why people don't deserve welfare, is because some people deliberately don't work so they can get their welfare. Lark Palm was at a meeting, and she was talking to a lady. One person said, “I got the opportunity to work hours at my job, but I didn't, because if I did I would lose my welfare and food stamps.” This is very unfair because you should work for your money, and she clearly had a chance to get more hours. This is a perfect example of why people don’t deserve welfare. There are many ways to get a job. Such as, when the Dollar Store put a sign on the window saying “Now Hiring” people don't jump right into that opportunity. You don't need a degree nor a certification to work at the Dollar Store. Clearly, there is no excuse for not being able to get a job there. Another reason would be, they aren't working, but many moms and dads are working, to support their families. But all in all, only half of their paycheck is used for their personally things. The other 50% goes to other families, who don't work so they don’t lose their welfare. As you can clearly see, why people don’t deserve welfare. Food stamps, a way to get free food, should also be reformed along with welfare. …show more content…
From the article “Top 10 Reasons Food Stamps Need to be Reformed.” It states that “The second most expensive means tested federal welfare program, behind only Medicaid.” This says that the government spends more money-That people work at their jobs for- on food stamps over other things. So someone who works turns in taxes and those taxes go to welfare and food stamps. That article also says, “... from 26 million in 2007 to nearly 47 million in 2012.” That is to say that people who use food stamps have increased by 45% in just five years. How long until people stop and we run out of food stamps? That's a logical question because if they don't pay for their food in stores, the stores won't make money. Then if the store doesn't make money, then they won't be able to get food. Finally they will go out of business. Then those people with the food stamps will go to another store and everywhere will go out of business. It is better for the other half of 55% of people that pay for food then everyone getting it for free. Lastly, when someone would go into a store and see people using their food stamps, That might influence them to apply for food stamps. The increase of people using Food Stamps will keep increasing and that may show future generations to do as they do. If the usage of welfare keeps increasing it may influenced future Generations. In the article, “Parents reliance On welfare leads to more welfare used by their children, study finds.” It states, “ Many past

Just as society is concerned about expenses and profits, elected representatives needs to have the same assessment of costs and benefits in regards to attaining savings through cuts in existing Texas aid programs, such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, which is mostly funded by federal money. Even though it provides nutritional aid, policymakers should tighten the controls on the program because it is non-taxable income, has loopholes, and increases government spending. As stated in the article The Next Welfare Reform: Food Stamps by Jason Riley, “between 2000 and 2013, SNAP caseloads nationwide grew to 47.6 million from 17.2 million, and spending grew to $80 billion from $20.6 billion (15).” As the Texas House and Senate look for ways to reduce the deficit, it would be wise to review the costs, potentially to reduce spending, as well as the savings associated with the program.…

Food stamps have always had a lot of attention and many proposals to lower the deficit (“One in Seven Americans Rely on Food Stamps”). Welfare assistance programs need to be reformed again, in order to make them effective. In 1996 the Welfare Reform Act was enacted and it changed the entire program for the better, but it still isn’t doing enough to prevent fraudulent behavior. The programs have become abused and need to be reformed again. America's welfare programs are tautological and repetitive. The current welfare state encourages dependence instead of lifting people out of poverty.…

Food stamps are being abused and used for meaningless things. The Government Accountability office reported," a number of SNAP benefits paid in error is substantial, totaling about $2.2 million in 2009"(Montgomery). The Government is working on making SNAP benefits harder to abuse, but despite the effort, millions are still being used. However, some argue that food stamps don't give enough variety or quality to meet the nutrition needs of several Americans. By focusing on the select variety and money per month overlooks the deeper problem of people abusing the system, whether that means using multiple cards or using SNAP benefits when they have no need for it.…

Welfare has always been a major point in today’s politics; every election the debate is brought forth once more and again when the Federal budget comes to the floor. It is assumed by many in the population that the program is for the lazy and encourages the poor to not find work or continues to have dependents to increase the amount of benefits they can receive. Many argue that it is the “right” of the individual to receive aid from the government when they cannot support their family. Others agree help is warranted but there must be limits set to avoid fraud or the program becomes not an aid but a way of life. Over the course of our nation’s history welfare reform has taken on many new faces and gone through many struggles.…

Programs such as SNAP need to be regulated, in that qualifying means to be drug tested and receipts sent in for auditing purchases. In regards to qualifying for social welfare, the “Current Population Survey (CPS) derives the official poverty rate by comparing incomes to the absolute poverty that was calculated back in the 1955 consumption patterns” (Cochran). This rate is absurd, when people apply for benefits the system “counts only cash income” (Cochran). In many situations a family may not qualify for benefits through income, but qualifies after deductions such as medical and healthcare costs, taxes and other work expenses. Too many are dependent on the government funding and decide to stay there.…

Another common misconception among the supporters of the welfare programs is: the money given to the people on welfare is given to people in a bad spot that have “paid for the services via a lifetime of work”(Moses). Unmistakably, there are people who have worked their whole lives paying taxes who find themselves in a spot of trouble and therefore the fact is true. These people are not the problem with the welfare system, the problem is the people who have grown up on welfare and now are raising their own children on welfare because that is all they know. The majority of the people who abuse the welfare systems are on supplemental security income, in which there are $4.6 billion which go to fraudulent people (Dehaven and Edwards). That fact is only the money to that particular branch within the welfare system, there are billions of dollars spent on fraudulent people on the other welfare programs.…

The welfare program in the United States is abused by many Americans. Citizens in the program get their sense of responsibility muted causing dependency on the government. There is a misuse of government grants and aids, and many abuse the money received.
