Although the content was graphic and disturbing, I enjoyed reading Restavec by Jean-Robert Cadet. Somehow, Cadet managed to make his autobiography equally poignant and entertaining by chronicling his incredibly sad story and including light-hearted anecdotes like when Cadet accidentally took his office birthday cake home because he did not know what he was supposed to do with it (Cadet 166). The story itself is funny because the reader pictures his colleagues surrounding his desk eager to enjoy the cake, but it is also sad when one realizes Cadet has never celebrated a birthday or had anyone care enough to get him a cake before.
