But, if the murder is committed by someone who you trust, just like a family member or best friend then it brings up a question about trust. So, when Gene gets permission to visit Finny in the school infirmary, he attempts to confess but he is unable to. Gene attempts to confess his mistake again, when he goes to visits Finny's home in the fall, in which he says it clearly to Finny that he was behind the accident. “I jounced the limb. I caused it…..I deliberately jounced the limb so you would fall off (Knowles 34).” Referring to this quote, two conclusion can be drawn, one Gene does not want to lose Finny, and second is Finny might not believe him. So when he did confess, Finny did not believe him, because he sees Gene like a family person, in which he only sees the goods in him, not bad. Before the fall Gene did envy Finny, but Finny’s fall helps him to understand that his attitude is the main reason for Finny’s accident. Since he is feeling guilty about causing the accident, he tries to ignore Finny as much as possible to forget what he had done to him. This brings to the point that during Finny’s funeral, Gene does not cry or show any kind of feelings, which shows that somewhere deep down he regrets of what he did to a person who cared for him. Finny’s influence over Gene does play a role in disturbing Gene’s life, but mostly, it is Gene’s fault since he agrees to do whatever Finny says. “Finny had deliberately set out to wreck my studies (Knowles 24).” According to Gene, Finny is sabotaging his studies because he thinks that Finny is jealous of his academic achievements. So, when Gene points the gun at Finny for failing the test, it is actually Gene’s fault. Finny is not responsible for ruining Gene’s study, because Finny did not force Gene to go watch sunset. Gene is responsible, because if he knew that he has test next day, for which he has to study for, he should have said no. But Gene agrees to go, because he wanted to prove that even he can be like Finny, and skip class and still do well in the test. Unfortunately, this did not turn out well for Gene, and blames Finny after knowing that it is his fault. Another reason why Gene envy’s Finny, is when Finny breaks the swimming record at Devon school, he mentions to Gene not to say it to anyone. Being so smart, Gene takes Finny’s words in to wrong meaning, he thinks that Finny is indirectly challenging Gene to compete in sports. ““No, I just wanted to see if I could do it. Now I know. But I don’t want to do it in public (Knowles 19).” The whole reason behind breaking the record was to see if Finny can set a new record. Now, Gene views this
