"What happened to the frogs?" (Griffith, 25) This line alone struck me since it's one of the main points of the book. Griffith asks what happened to the frogs in El Valle, he knew the golden frog was at risk for possible extinction, but had the extinction come sooner then he thought? The golden frog once was an extremly popular amphibian of El Valle, so famous their were seveal different types of figurines sold of the golden frog. The sounds of the golden frog could be heard through El Valle. When researchers went to find golden frogs they were stunned to see little to no golden frogs. A "frog hotel" was set up for the frogs to keep them safe from extinction and make it possible for them to procreate. Edgardo Griffith was the director of EVACC, and a key part of his job was to learn about the frogs. Griffith's mission was to save as many rare frogs from possible extinction, and so he would go on excursions to search for amphibians that were on the verge of extinction. In the time he was rescuing the amphibians it seemed as if they were disappearing at an alarming rate. So we ask what was causing these once popular frogs to disappear? What did happen to the frogs, and how were they disappearing in different areas all over around the same time. In Whashington D.C at the National Zoo poison dart frogs were being raised, and it was there that Chytrid fungi was discovered. The Fungi was found on the animal's skin. Chytrid fungi is a fungus that can be found at tops of trees, and deep underground. This fungus would quickly sicken what ever it infected, and then
