In The Call of the Wild, Jack London creates the character of Buck by using physical characteristics, mental characteristics, and descriptions of actions. The author used physical characteristics to describe Buck as a large dog. In Chapter 1 we read that, "His father Elmo, a huge St. Bernard, had been Judge's inseparable companion, and Buck bid fair to follow in the way of his Father. He was not so large- he weighed only one hundred and forty pounds - for his mother, Shep, had been a Scotch shepard dog.…

The Call of the Wild is about a pampered dog whose lifestyle changes dramatically to living in the wild. The central theme is about how humans’ treatment of animals in The Call of the Wild conveys that how you treat an animal reveals your true character and what type of person you are because Hal, Charles, and Mercedes died right after beating the dogs. Hal, Charles, and Mercedes mistreated the dogs and then fell through the ice. “He pulled when he could; when he could no longer pull, he fell down and remained down till blows from whip or club drove him to his feet.” They would run the dogs till they were tired and no longer could stand and assumed they were being lazy so they would beat them.…

From the first moment Buck was thrown into the harsh arctic civilization of the Klondike, he himself was used to gain power and wealth for others. Hautman wrote, “Yes, books are dangerous. They should be dangerous-they contain ideas” Have you ever thought of a book that just brought you to tears or left you hopeless. Not all books are bad for you, they can help show emotions and ideas. Many people believe that books should be banned in some schools for their references to murder, adultery, and incest. For example, people would believe that “The Invisible Man” and “Call of the Wild” should be banned because of blood and inappropriate actions for teens.…

Being a dog, Buck was treated terribly; constantly being beaten, uncared for, and worked. “He had never been struck by a club in his life, and did not understand,” this quote describes how Buck had never experienced being abused and how he didn’t understand why someone would do something like that. He was neglected in many ways, one being he was underfed and unkempt. In To Build a Fire, the man never owned any dogs or used them to travel. The Call of the Wild is a gruesome story written by Jack London. The book has been made into a movie directed by Peter Svatek. Though the book and movie are very much alike, the scene where Buck pulls 1000 pounds has small differences that make a huge impact on the reader. The scene also illustrates a difference in the character of John Thornton and how he reacts to winning the bet. In the book, when Buck pulls 1000 pounds, John Thornton curses him with a strong sense of compassion and comfort.…

The theme that I have chosen to analyze in The Call of the Wild is the power of instinct. Buck and the other dogs are living in the frozen terrain of northern Canada and they experience starvation, exhaustion, and freezing temperatures. Buck is put into a place where he must learn skills in order to survive the harsh conditions. Throughout the story we learn that Buck isn't just learning new skills, but is merely recovering primitive instincts. As you read the book, the author writes in way that seems as if Buck is going back to his old ways.…

IfThe Call of the Wild is a story about ultimately achieving mastery over a foreign, primal world, that mastery is achieved only through separation from the group and independent survival. Throughout much of the story, Buck is serving a master or a pack; even as a leader he is carrying out someone else’s commands and is responsible for the well-being of the group. In many ways, then, when John Thornton cuts Buck free from his harness, he is also beginning the process of Buck’s separation from a pack mentality. Although Buck continues to serve Thornton, his yearnings for a solitary life in the wild eventually overcome…
