"Disabled" is a war poem by Wilfred Owen written in 1917 during The First World War, focusing on a young soldier who has lost both his legs and an arm in the war, switching between his dismal current life and the excitement of his youth. “Refugee Blues” is a war poem by W. H. Auden written in 1939 during The Second World War; It is about Jewish refugees who were forced from their home in Germany and fled to a european country for protection. The poem pin points how they are treated badly due to their Jewish heritage during Hitlers reign. Both of the poems focus on the effect of war for the down-trodden during the World Wars. this shows the vastly different spectrums of life that occurred during the war and the contrast of jews with the rest of society, this makes us feel pity for the refugees as the word ‘holes’ could be referring to a hovel or indeed to a grave. this is effective as it displays to the reader a sense of danger and shows us that no one is looking after the dead as they are in ‘holes’ rather than graves. My second way is two quotes from ‘Disabled’ ‘suit of grey’ and ‘swing so gay when glow lights budded’ the juxtaposition of colour and atmosphere in the first stanza and the second stanza is effective as it shows us how the life for the soldier was before the war. The use of alliteration used by Owen on ‘gay’ and ‘glow’ is effective as it emphasises and links the positive times, in comparison with his life now which is ‘grey’ and miserable this elevates the sense of loss in the poem from the very beginning. the use of sexual imagery and contrast in the quote ‘feel again how slim girl’s waists are’. This is effective as it shows the difference in how women treat him after the war in comparison to how they treated him before, and how he believed they would treat him when he returned. The mention of ‘his meg’ is ironic as he left the for war to impress her; now “women’s eyes passed from him’ showing how they reject him in his pressed world caused by the war itself. the last contrast from the poems that i will be exploring is ‘old yew, every spring it blossoms anew:’. this line is another link to religion showing that the jews were looking for hope all around them which is also emphasised by ‘anew’ linking to hope as well and new life. this is effective as the jews were stripped of their human rights by hitler and they therefore cannot start a new life so it shows the contrast the peace of nature in
