In a particularly contentious election year, everyone has wondered what makes a good leader. There have been discussions about what traits or criteria should be used to judge someone as to if they are a good leader, or even have the potential to be one. Is Donald Trump capable because he inspires the masses, even if he seems to have little to no knowledge of government affairs? Is Hillary Clinton an effective leader because of the shear width breadth of her knowledge even if she seems to struggle with communicating with people? So we cast about, looking for examples to compare our leaders to, and see if they measure up. In truth though, there is no set answer for these questions, because each person has a different leadership style that comes with its own strengths and weaknesses. Organizations like Gallup have commissioned studies of “what’s right with people” (Rath 2008), while psychologist like David Keirsey looked at what makes an individual’s personality different from others. There are also numerous others who have attempted to nail down aspects of personality and its relation to how someone can grow as both an individual and leader. By using these assessments and understanding their results, and having key role models to study, I can formulate a plan that would help allow me to better implement my leadership skills.
