“The Deer King” is a fantasy novel written by Nahoko Uehashi. This story sets in a fictitious world which is not modernized like this real world, but many ethnic groups live in. Characters in the story struggle to find the cause of disease and settle conflict between two ethnic groups.
Nahoko Uehashi is a novelist, and a cultural anthropologist. She is also a professor of some universities. She has been interested in juvenile literature since she is young.

In the story, many animals and plants appears. The relationship between nature and humans is one of the theme. There is the message that humans should not underestimate the power of nature, and should respect symbiotic relationship between humans, animals, and plants. This story has the theme of tradition and technology. Hossal is researching the cause and remedy of the new disease. He developed the use of vaccine, and serum therapy.
However, it is required to find those remedy to research in the history, or folk remedies.
The folks often has important knowledge. Uehashi knows that because she is an anthropologist. Uehashi often takes up those kind of topics. “The Deer King” has a lot of characteristic point of Uehashi’s way of writing. This book would be appreciated by all the fantasy fans, and I recommend it for especially non-Japanese, because Uehashi’s world is a little different from traditional view of the fantasy world.
