Cognitive Development
Cognitive development is the formation of thought processes that occurs from childhood to adulthood. To illustrate this concept is Jean Piaget Cognitive Theory. Piaget proposed that people learn in stages each increasing in abstract levels of thought; occurring in the same order, and each building on what was learned in the previous stage.
According to the Jean Piaget Cognitive Theory there are four stages of cognitive development. The first stage is the Sensorimotor stage and occurs during infancy. During this stage learning is demonstrated through motor activity and information is limited, but is developing. The second stage is the Pre-operational stage and occurs during toddlerhood and early childhood. This research study examines the stages of development in the Mentally Retarded.
