Do you remember the excitement as a child to receive something in the mail? Every day you would run to the mailbox with hopes of getting mail. Children in today’s society don’t know the excitement that comes with the mail. Today’s children will grow up to expect emails, texts, and other forms of technology. What is the true importance of written communication? Some may say that there is none while others wish we could go back in time to when that was the only communication we had. It’s impossible considering a large extent of a business depends heavily on letters, reports, and contracts for various reasons. Businesses all over the world use the power of written communication to keep organized and to connect with other businesses. One reason is that written work is permanent, unless otherwise destroyed. Meanwhile, spoken words are often described as being able to disappear in the wind. Anybody can change what they say but they are not able to go back on what is written (Chand). Responsibility is assigned with ease and promotes uniformity of policy and procedures. The guidelines of the workplace are properly written down and the warnings are also written to enforce important policies (Suttle). Another reason is that it is more likely for an employee to correct his behavior when employers document transgressions with letters and he faces possible termination for disobedience (Suttle). Also, written communication is widely used because it creates a great image for the company. All a business wants is to create a proposal that will sell. In order to look well put together, the company uses spreadsheets, slideshows, written reports, and contracts to be successful and create an organized image of the business (Suttle). Written communication is also important for a person who is applying for the job. If you are unable to write correctly, or even speak correctly, you are less likely to get the job. Although written communication is important in a work place, it also has many limitations. The most common is how time-consuming the process is (Chand). In many transactions, feedback is needed as soon as possible. With written communication, immediate feedback is almost impossible (Chand).
