Social and economic conflicts of an everyday person in the 20th century drive the meaning behind the lyrics. “2!3!” highlights the powerless feeling after being beaten by the system. They describe that “Because you don’t have power / You would certainly have done dirty deeds / Observing how you act, soon you’ll cease to exist” (14-16), this is an illustration of one of many ways that giving up on oneself would lead to deeper conflicts. It happens now, and it happened in the 1930s America. People were forced to commit unthinkable deeds that they wouldn’t have imagined doing, simply because of the socioeconomic situation they were placed in. Examples such as taking jobs that go against their morals, all the way to stealing food and essentials to sustain and provide for their family.
