What is terrorism? Is it random, or does every attack have a plan? Terrorism is defined as "The unlawful use of force and violence against persons or property to intimidate or coerce a government, the civilian population, or any segment thereof, in furtherance of political or social objectives" (FBI). Why does it happen? Many people believe that terrorism happens for no reason. In reality, there is a very well thought out scheme for every terrorist plot. Radical acts of terrorism is not random. “Terrorist violence is neither ‘indiscriminate’ nor random. Being not ‘a goal in itself, but rather a means to an end,’ terrorism is by definition not accidental” (Roislien). There are a variety of reasons that people use to justify their acts. Among these reasons are: ethno-nationalism, discrimination, religion, socioeconomic status and political grievances. Before an effective argument can be made, one must know the background of the cause. Have radicals always been bombing buildings and convoys? Exactly how old is terrorism? “The history of terrorism is as old as humans ' willingness to use violence to affect politics. The Sicarii were a first century Jewish group who murdered enemies and collaborators in their campaign to oust their Roman rulers from Judea” (Zalman). However, terrorism has come a long way since the first century. The beginning of modern terrorism was in 1793 during the French Revolution.
