Across the broad ranges of cultures, ethnicities, and religions; one thing should always be taken into consideration when interacting with other people. That is Human Dignity. What is human dignity? Well I want to focus on the word Dignity since ‘Human’ is self-explanatory. Dignity comes from the Latin word Dignus, meaning worth, or worthy. The modern definition of Dignity is, “quality or state of being worthy, honored, or respected”. The Christian community similarly defines Human dignity as, “each human being was created in the image and likeness of God, therefore each life is sacred having value and should be treated with respect”. Those of the Christian community base the meaning of human dignity out of the Holy Bible; Book of Genesis chapter 1 verses 26 and 27. I personally can say that I don’t think of dignity as often, not because it isn’t of importance to me, but rather it’s like second nature to me. I know I am not the only one to think of dignity as second nature, but I can say it should be stressed and spoken about more because there are a greater number of people who don’t think of human dignity. Even with respecting others as a second nature, no human being is perfect and we tend to act in ways that might disrespect a person’s dignity. In more extreme cases there are historical events such as The Holocaust, Slavery, and the Rwandan Genocide, to name a few, are examples of human dignity being violated.
