I chose an interesting debate on Chapter 3, “Applause: For Whom Are You Clapping?” Is clapping appropriate during the service? Personally, I would call myself a traditionalist, but I’m not offended if a congregation claps after a soloist song or musical piece. I believe there is an appearance for every setting and because we are talking about the church, clapping is not a normal action done within a congregation. Rewind several thousand years during Paul and the early church, applause to someone or some group was not proper. The modern church today is quite different from the early church, Romanesque and Gothic periods of our history. Why should we sing hymns? Young people don’t like them. That just isn’t my kind of music. You won’t win anyone with that music. Worship should be free of encumbrances like hymnbooks. Hymns are too hard to understand” (Jones 189). All of these questions are true and are continually asked in the Christian society. I believe that the reason why hymns aren’t sung as much anymore is because people don’t like the way it sounds anymore. It is too old fashioned to them to even consider singing. The society we live in today surrounds itself around pop culture and the secular songs people invest their time listening too. This is where the controversy begins. We (the church) are to be separate from the world. We should stand out as different to others and not fit in with the world. Romans 12:2 clearly states to not be part of this world and to renew our
