Hester was forced to wear a scarlet letter “A” on her chest to show that she had committed adultery. The scarlet letter is a sign of her sin, so that everyone is able to see and judge her for what she did. Women in this town were expected to follow strict rules and be very religious. She is seen as a demon but in reality she is independent and her mother Hester has internal ideas but never do it. On the other hand, however, pearl is external that follows through her mother’s ideas and that makes her be independent. “She was self-ordained a Sister of Mercy; or, what we may rather say, the world’s heavy hand had so ordained her, when neither the world nor she looked forward to this result. The letter was a symbol of her calling.” (Hawthorne). Hester is giving back to society that was mean and cruel to her. She brings food to the poor and nurses the sick. All things considered, Hester was forced to wear a scarlet letter on her chest meaning she committed adultery so that people can judge her for what she did. She became independent but it was difficult for a single woman to support herself, so she decided to sew garments for wedding and get money so that way she can support herself and her daughter. After all, Pearl becomes independent because her mother taught her to be on her own and follows her mother’s ideas. As it has been noted, Pearl is the breeding symbol of “A” because people in society see her as a sin and a demon but eventually she has the freedom that her mother gave
