The War of 1812 occurred for two main reasons. One of these reasons was trade. Britain and France had been in a long arduous war. In order to weaken the other side, France tried to block America from trading with England, and England tried to block America from trading with France. Congress was angered by this, and the president’s attempt to counteract act this ended in failure (e.g. the non-intercourse act crippled the U.S. economy rather than solving the problem). However, the official reason was the Impression Issue that the British government had enacted. This document stated that the British government could search any American merchant ship and draft healthy men to fight in their navy. The War of 1812 was faced with great energy by the Americans. However, Britain did not fully enter the war until after their conflict with France had been resolved. Just like the Revolutionary War, Britain had a lot of military advantages, but with careful planning and some surprising military victories, the Americans were able to continue in the war. Near the beginning of the war, America experienced several defeats by the British Navy. However, the Americans were still able to conquer and raid York (Toronto) by winning an early victory over Lake Ontario. This victory was achieved due to Oliver Hazard Perry. The Americans were also able to defeat Tecumseh, the chief of the Shawnees who was working with the British. The British retaliated for the raid of York by sending a very well-prepared navy into Washington (now Washington D.C.). They burned several public buildings were burned including the White House, the House of Representatives, and the Capitol building were burned.
