The Columbian Exchange refers to the exchange of plants, animals, and diseases across the Atlantic Ocean in both directions. The exchange was brought on by the Europeans travelling through the Atlantic to the New World. By bringing plants, animals, and diseases with them, both sides of the ocean were affected.
Sugar was the most important of the goods in the Atlantic world. While trying to obtain control of the best areas of sugar production, Columbus brought it to Hispaniola in 1493. The Caribbean Islands and other tropical areas were the next century of colonization. Tobacco …show more content…
There was death, and a lot of it. When the Europeans crossed the Atlantic, they also brought many new diseases with them. Because the natives had never been exposed to these diseases, they were extremely susceptible to small pox, measles, mumps, chicken pox, malaria, and yellow fever. The New World's population decreased by 50-90%. While some groups population decreased, others were completely destroyed by these diseases. Once the leaders of several tribes started dying, it cause war between, even within, many tribes. Great explanation of the impacts the European explorations had on the New World and vice versa. I agree with you that the Old World learned more from the New World. The Old World used the things they learned in the New World to advance their knowledge of crops, and animals, and way of living in general. I believe that many things the Old World discovered could not have been discovered with out the New World.

Definitely agree with you on this post. The Old World had no idea of any of these crops until they were introduced to them by the natives after arriving in America. This changed the entire way of life for these European explorers. A lot of these crops are things we normally get from the grocery store. Imagine not having these for half your life, and all the sudden being introduced to them. Most likely made a big difference in their way of
